The Oven Aves Memorial Lecutre, Wednesday 13 March 2019

Elaine Grisdale, Head of Professional Service and International Development at ABDO, presented the Owen Aves Memorial Lecture in Brighouse on 13 March 2019, 90 years after its inception.

Her talk, on the subject Taking Quality Vision Global, considered the progression of optometry and optics from her perspective over the past 35 years, highlighting the importance of continuous learning, professional development, teamwork, clinical trials, specialisation for the future and engagement with professional organisations. Her experience includes working with Bernard Maitenaz, the inventor of the first commercially viable progressive lens. He built on the work of Owen Aves, who had held the first patent for a varifocal design, granted in 1907.

The prestigious Owen Aves Memorial Lecture has been given since 1929 by speakers from a range of backgrounds who have made major contributions to the development of the Optical Professions.
